Dear Grand Customers and Supporters,
For almost 100 years, film has been the media used to entertain movie theater audiences around the world. The Motion Picture was the cornerstone on which thousands of theaters were built, from 5,000+ seat city palaces to small 50 seat storefront theaters. From day one, the Grand has shown film, 16mm then 35mm.
Hollywood is ending this long and rich tradition of film in 2013, and theaters across the world are faced with a decision - convert or close. Estimates are that 15% of theaters will close due to the end of 35mm film and the forced conversion to digital cinema. The price of the new equipment is steep - think a fully loaded Cadillac Escalade - and many theaters simply cannot afford that expense.
The support we have received, and continue to receive, from our customers, and their positive "word of mouth," has allowed the Grand to grow and prosper to the point where we are able to afford this conversion to digital cinema without a dime of taxpayer money, unlike other theaters. We're proud to announce we've signed the contracts, and the Grand will be converting to digital cinema April 16th and 17th, ensuring that the Grand continues with the same great movies and services you have come to expect.
Exactly 88 years to the day that construction started on the Grand, April 15, 1924, we'll be sending off 35mm film. Watch for updates on our "Farewell to Film" on April 15, 2012. It is going to be a proper sendoff for generations of tradition and saying good-bye to our 35mm friend.
Warmest Regards,
Ed Buchinski
